On May 25, 2024, the Bayelsa Governor's Football Tournament, in partnership with the Bayelsa State Football Association, hosted a significant event aimed at elevating the quality of officiating for this year's Prosperity Cup.
The 1-Day Referees Refresher Course was held at the NUJ Press Center and brought together experienced referees and aspiring officials from across the state.The seminar was graced by notable figures in the football community, with Hon (Dr) Daniel Igali, Commissioner for Sports Development, serving as the Special Guest of Honour. Barr. Poubeni Ogun, Chairman of the Bayelsa Football Association (BFA) and Chairman of the NFF Referees Committee, chaired the occasion.
Other distinguished guests included Mrs. Grace Alagoa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports Development, Mr. Kelechi Mejuobi, Deputy President of the Nigeria Football Referees Association, and Chief Patimidi Tukuru, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Projects.The course was expertly handled by two renowned instructors with extensive credentials and experience in football officiating:1. A retired FIFA Referee and CAF Referees Technical Instructor/Assessor, and FIFA MA RAP Instructor. She was recognized as the best Referee in the Nigeria Premier League in 2019.2. Calistus Chukwudi Chukwujekwu: A highly respected Nigerian football referee and instructor. He has served as a FIFA Referee Instructor and a CAF Referees Instructor, playing a crucial role in training and developing referees across Africa.The seminar provided an invaluable opportunity for referees to gain insights from these seasoned professionals, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges of officiating in the Prosperity Cup.
